PRIVATE PROPERTY

Respect it as that!

A recent incident occurred on the lake that involved anchored boats and private property owners. The incident concluded with the intervention of DNR and the Williamson County Sheriff. The resolution is pending.

What part of Private Property do people not understand? Lake of Egypt is a private lake with no public property on it, unless you consider the Shawnee National Forest boat ramp. This Editor does not comprehend the mentality that it is acceptable to use someone’s private dock and property, without permission, when you are boating on the lake.

Private docks and lake property are not public toilets for people or animals. Residents are not sounding boards for rude and obscene language along with loud music. Music is a personal choice and lake residents should not be subjected to the music choices of boaters. In many instances, the music is offensive and disruptive. Property Owners purchased on the lake for the serenity it provides.

Anyone who launches a boat on this lake should enjoy their recreation, but must follow the lake rules and respect the homeowners who reside on the lake.

“Lake Rules” state that boats cannot anchor closer than 100 feet from the shoreline. Some boaters are tying up to and using private docks; this is trespassing.

The complete list of lake rules is available at the SIPC office, at any Lake of Egypt marina and on-line.

If someone is rude when you are at a football game or other event, you can get up and move. As lake front property owners, these individuals cannot pick up and move. Lake front property owners deserve the same respect and privacy that other homeowners enjoy.

Summer is here; it is the most vibrant time of the year on the Lake of Egypt.

Outdoor activities on and off the water are in full bloom, with boating, fishing, cookouts, fireworks (July 3rd-Elks), golf, and get togethers with friends, families, and neighbors.

This time of year is also when your LEAPO organization begins its new fiscal year with a new executive board. We would personally like to thank Jan Brock, retiring president (two terms) and her husband, Paul (by-laws committee chairman and web-master), who have been transferred out of the area; they have been tireless workers who have benefited LEAPO and the Lake greatly. They will be sorely missed.

Thanks also to Marty Hinz, retiring vice-president, who has served exceptionally well. The good news is that Marty remains on the LEAPO board and also continues as Editor of the "Anchor".

Your new 2010/2011 executive LEAPO board will consist of myself, Steve Bly-Wagon Creek Ranch, president, Alun Hughes (our favorite "Brit")-Eagle Point Bay, vice-president, and Linda Escherich-North Shoreland, stays on as treasurer, of which we are very fortunate and grateful.

Special thanks and kudos to all who organized, helped, and worked so hard on the LEAPO annual member picnic and meeting; a great time was had by all even on a hot and humid afternoon.

Living at the Lake keeps getting better and the reasons are many and varied such as: new and improved marinas, local businesses and restaurants, new developments, "The Peninsula", new construction in existing sub-divisions, new fire station, SIPC & patrol boat, improve signage around lake etc. The Lake is still growing and a significant contributor to both Johnson and Williamson Counties.

But one reason for this growth and improvement that stands above many of the others is YOU and your INVOLVEMENT in our unique and extraordinary community. Involvement in your sub-division and LEAPO is an excellent way to keep us moving forward and improving everyone's quality of life. Consider representing your sub-division (if it is not represented) or assisting in: subdivision beautification or garden clubs, road cleanup events, blood drives, donations to local food pantries, recycling at various spots around lake, safety issues like neighborhood mapping, etc.

Just being a member of LEAPO saves significant money on Trash collection, discounts at an ever-growing number of businesses and restaurants; it's also your representative and liaison with SIPC and both Chambers of Commerce/Development boards of Williamson and Johnson Counties.

In closing, I would like to share just a few personal thoughts about "living at the lake".

My wife and I are "two-timers" at the Lake of Egypt, residing here the first time at Sunset Harbor from 1977-1990 and raising our family. We were transferred to Minneapolis/St. Paul (empty-nesters) and spent 15 wonderful years up North.

Upon retirement in 2005 and with kids and grand children still in Southern Illinois, we purchased our "Ocean Front Property" in Illinois and built our dream home "Blyou" on a point in Wagon Creek Ranch, LOE that is surrounded by water and looks across at the Shawnee National Forest.

We have been fortunate to travel to many beautiful places across our country and abroad but nothing is as beautiful as waking up in the morning and going to bed at night on the Lake of Egypt. The late John Denver's most famous song applies to all of us at the Lake, "Almost Heaven".

From everyone at LEAPO, we wish you all a fun and safe summer.

Steve Bly, President
